  2. the son of Abu Talib, uncle to the prophet
  3. Muhammad, who gave him his daughter Fatima in
  4. marriage. On Muhammad's death 632, Ali had a
  5. claim to succeed him, but this was not
  6. conceded until 656. After a stormy reign, he
  7. was assassinated. Around Ali's name the
  8. controversy has raged between the Sunni and
  9. the Shi'ites (see Islam), the former denying
  10. his right to the caliphate and the latter
  11. supporting it.
